Children, Dear Children - A Red Nose Day Poem - By Me!
Children, dear children standing in the street
Children, dear children dying on their feet
Children, dear children begging for scrags of meat
Children, dear children, eyes showing defeat
Crowded homes with no room to lay their head
not even a mattress to call a bed.
Fetid stench of human waste
flow down in a stream; a smell you can taste!
When they hurt they have to tolerate the affliction
For them there is no consolation.
As health can take it’s toll on the little means
they have, good health is a luxury it seems.
Clothes on their back hard to find
Keeping warm with things other’s left behind
Most of the time their feet are dirty and rough
The soles careworn and tough
Parents struggling to get their kids a form of education
Toiling, scrubbing even prostitution
Clinging on to hope that things would change for good
If basic subjects were understood.
Children dear Children begging in the street
Children, dear children, just for little scrags of meat
Children, dear children hang down their heads with a sigh
Children, dear children in the slum they die.
Made the hairs on the back of my neck prickle. xx
